Securities Markets Annual Conference

The global financial crisis raised important challenges for emerging local bond markets, from having to respond to excessive foreign outflows to determining how to regulate securities firms and products in the future. The Securities Markets Annual Conference considered the impact of the crisis on local currency bond markets and critical steps in their development going forward. Speakers answered such questions as: How has the need for government and corporate bond markets been affected? What changes in regulating securities markets and institutions are most critical? Should securitization continue to be used, but with appropriate safeguards to avoid some of the abuses seen in more developed markets? Should emerging market countries consider adopting some of the regulatory changes being proposed in the US and UK? How can the World Bank Group help?
