This article makes three points: I - Current government debt is not a fixed amount; much of it is a contingent liability whose size depends on future developments. II - One of the factors influencing the size of the debt is the way that monetary policy is conducted. III - Current methods of monetary control are likely to be Unnecessary expensive, partly owing to a highly defensive interpretation of central bank independence
