The UK is not a fiscal outlier among advanced economies when measured by traditional debt and deficit metrics. Projections from the International Monetary Fund show that the stock of UK government debt as a share of GDP and the UK’s fiscal balance are relatively favourable compared to peers, with projections indicating that the UK will undertake a larger fiscal consolidation (2.2% of GDP) between 2025 and 2030 than the average across advanced economies (0.3%).
